Photosynthetic Organism Yields more Sugar than SugarCane

Privately owned start-up Proterro (Princeton, NJ) is developing a cyanobacteria - a photosynthetic microorganism named Protose - that can generate higher yields of sugar per acre than sugarcane and other conventional sources at a lower cost, the company says. The cheap sugar may be used to make ethanol for use as a biofuel or for converting into other chemicals.  "Sugar is still too expensive," says Kef Kasdin, Proterro's CEO.
