Shell's Carbon Storage Plan Hits Local Pressure

Residents in the town of Barendrecht, the Netherlands are becoming increasingly vocal in their resistance to proposals by Shell to store CO2 off-gas from a nearby gasification hydrogen plant at Pernis under the town. Shell is proposing that CO2 could be stored one mile under the town in a depleted natural gas field. The planned project is part of Shell’s strategy to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).   Some local residents say they are concerned about the potential safety of such a project, however, and claim the technology could be dangerous...
