Sustainability Penford Targeting Composite Based on Starch and CO2-Sequestering Polymer4:40 PM MST | January 18, 2012 | Rebecca Coons Food and industrial starch supplier Penford (Centennial, CO) and renewable plastics firm Novomer (Waltham, MA) says they have signed a joint development agreement to accelerate the commercialization of starch-polypropylene carbonate (PPC) composites. Novomer makes a catalyst that converts propylene oxide (PO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into PPC, which the company says can replace petroleum-based plastics like polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride while providing the environmental benefit of sequestering CO2.
