New Rail Rule Aims to Improve Safety, Security of Hazmat Shipments

The Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued its long-awaited interim final rule calling for railroads carrying chlorine, anhydrous ammonia, and other poison by inhalation (PIH) chemicals to take the safest and most secure routes. The rule requires railroads, which have been expecting this rule since late 2006, to compile and analyze data for six months beginning this July regarding the hazardous materials they carry and routes used to transport them.
