GICA: New Orleans Floodgate Poses Safety Risks; Comments Due on Lock Replacement Plans

Chemical barges and other vessels will likely find it trickier to navigate in the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway around New Orleans once the construction of a 150-ft-wide floodgate is completed, say industry representatives. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) recently broke ground on the Lake Borgne floodgate, located close to where the Intracoastal Waterway meets the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO), but several groups contend that the floodgate is too narrow to safely accommodate barge traffic.
