UN Ban on Nine Chemicals Takes Effect

A new ban on substances added to the list of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) under the UN's Stockholm Convention takes effect today. The nine substances or groups of substances were first added to the list of POPs in May 2009. They include pesticides and flame retardants still in use, the UN says. POPs must be eliminated from use in the 170 countries that have ratified the Stockholm Convention, though phase-outs are allowed.
