The downturn, which accelerated quickly in late 2008, has been far more brutal and severe than anyone expected and its consequences could reshape industry. Early 2009 is, so far, a continuation of those late 2008 trends. Chemical railcar loadings through the first five weeks of 2009 are down 19% from year-ago levels.
