 The severe fourth-quarter drops in chemical demand are likely to be matched by even sharper declines in reported earnings over the next few weeks. Consensus earnings estimates for chemical makers tracked by BB&T Capital Markets (New York) plunged 80% between October 1 and December 31, 2008. “After ticking downward in the first part of the quarter, consensus estimates for the fourth quarter took a nosedive in December,” says Frank Mitsch, BB&T analyst, who forecasts that year-over-year fourth-quarter earnings will decline more than 50%...
