BASF Acquires Seed Treatment Firm Becker Underwood for $1.2 Billion

BASF says it plans to acquire biological seed treatment maker Becker Underwood (Ames, IA) from Norwest Equity Partners for €785 million ($1.02 billion). Becker is expected to have sales of $240 million for fiscal year 2012 ending September 30. BASF’s crop protection division plans to create a strategic global business unit called functional crop care. The unit will merge the two firms’ research, development and marketing activities in the areas of seed treatment, biological crop protection, plant health, as well as water and resource management.
