Prices in holding pattern as China, WTO mull quota

Pricing for the often topsy-turvy market for rare earth metals—a group of 17 metals used in catalysts, electronics, and defense applications, among others—declined and then stablized this year as Chinese export restrictions came under fire from the World Trade Organization (WTO). The organization ruled in April ( CW, March 31/April 7, p. 14) that China’s quotas on rare earths’ exports violate the trade agreement that the country has signed.
