Shippers Meet in Washington to Promote Changes to Rail Laws

U.S. rail shippers met with lawmakers last week to support legislation that would overhaul the federal Surface Transportation Board (STB), which is charged with overseeing railroad service and rate disputes. The shippers also promote another bill that would end railroads’ exemption from U.S. antitrust laws. Shippers including chemical, coal, and paper companies say that the STB has not effectively ensured that railroads provide reliable service at a fair price, and that the antitrust exemption should be eliminated to allow for increased competition.
