Researchers Tally Impact of Neonicotinyl Insecticides on Bee Populations

Number's Up: Research links exposure with decline in bee colonies. Researchers at Stirling University (Stirling, U.K.) and the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA; Avignon, France) have published separate studies linking the use of neonicotinyl insecticides with declining bee populations. The Stirling study found 85% of queen bumblebees—the foundation of future bee populations—die when exposed to relatively small concentrations of Imidacloprid, a neonicotinyl insecticide.
