Railroads Push for Industry to Adopt Safer Technologies

The Association of American Railroads (AAR; Washington) told a House panel last week that the chemical industry should be required to use inherently safer technologies (ISTs) wherever possible, citing the availability of alternatives to chlorine and other substances that could be attractive targets for terrorists. The Homeland Security panel heard comments from witnesses called to testify on the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Act of 2008, which would expand current requirements including mandatory consideration of ISTs.
