Nations Agree to Accelerate HCFC Phaseout

More than 180 nations have agreed to speed up the phaseout of hydrofluorocarbons (HCFCs) by amending certain provisions in the 1987 Montreal Protocol treaty on ozone depleting, which bans ozone-depleting substances. HCFCs, which were used to replace chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and meant to be only an interim substitute, have in recent years been identified as a greenhouse gas (GHG), United Nations (UN) officials say.
