NIH Discontinues Phthalate Review

The toxicology program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH; Bethesda, MD) says it will not conduct additional health effects testing on diethyl phthalate (DEP). NIH’s National Toxicology Program (NTP) has decided that the extensive testing of laboratory animals would be better used in other risk assessments, officials say. The decision, made December 6 by NTP’s Board of Scientific Counselors, was in response to a request by some NIH officials seeking more testing to determine DEP’s effects on reproductive health.
