EPA Recommends Less Stringent Standard for Ammonia

EPA has issued a draft Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessment for ammonia, including a recommended limit regarding how much is likely safe for a person to inhale throughout a lifetime. The draft recommendation is less stringent than the current standard, the agency says. The preliminary assessment recommends a reference dose concentration (RfC) for ammonia of 0.3 mg/m3, which was derived using a duration-adjusted No Observed Adverse Effect Limit (NOEL) of 3.1/mg/m3.
