Chemical Week Magazine :: Pharmaceuticals & Fine Chemicals Phenol Fire Closes Channel Tunnel2:16 PM MDT | September 12, 2008 | Alex Scott About 300 firefighters from France and the U.K. this morning extinguished a chemical truck fire that had been burning for 16 hours deep inside the 31-mile Channel Tunnel. The undersea tunnel connects Calais, France with Folkestone, U.K. The fire occurred at a point seven miles from Calais. A truck full of phenol is understood to have been the source of the fire.
