GSK to Shut U.K. Manufacturing Plant by 2013

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) says it plans to close its manufacturing facility at Dartford, U.K., by 2013 and transfer production either to contract manufacturing companies or to other GSK facilities. The closure, which is subject to consultation with trade union and staff representatives, will result in 620 job cuts, about 1% of its global workforce, GSK says. The plans for closure reflect “the fiercely competitive environment in which the pharmaceutical industry operates,” says Joe Foley, site director at Dartford.
