Hanwha Chemical eyeing Dow’s chlor-alkali assets

Hanwha Chemical (Seoul), a producer of chlor-alkali, polyethylene, and polyvinyl chloride and a major player in solar energy, is in the early stages of assessing the possibility of acquiring Dow Chemical’s North American chlor-alkali assets. Dow announced in December 2013 that it is carving out a $5-billion/year chunk of its chlorine value chain for disposal as part of the company’s long-term shift to higher-margin, noncyclical activities.
