European Council approves amendment on Cd, Hg in batteries

The European Council says it has approved an amendment to a directive on batteries and accumulators in order to reduce the amount of cadmium and mercury released into the environment. The new directive will prohibit the marketing of button cells containing less than 2% mercury by weight. The ban will apply 21 months after the new directive enters into force. The European Commission will report to the European Parliament and the European Council on the availability of alternatives to button cells for use in hearing aids.
