EU okays Kyoto

The European Commission has proposed the legislation necessary for the European Union to ratify formally the second commitment period (2013–20) of the Kyoto Protocol on climate change. The European Union, its member states, and Iceland have committed to achieve a 20% reduction in their combined greenhouse gas emissions during this period compared with levels in 1990 or the respective base-year selected.
