BASF to Restart Mothballed THF Plant in China

BASF says it will restart a mothballed tetrahydrofuran (THF) plant at Caojing, China, near Shanghai, by early 2010. The 80,000-m.t./year plant started operating in 2005, based on a novel butane-based production process. The technology encountered problems, however, causing BASF to mothball the plant earlier this year and include a one-off, €200-million ($284 million) Ebit charge in its accounts.
