Shipments of manufactured products rose 2.6% in July, rebounding from a 0.5% drop the previous month. Sales of durable goods were up 3.9%, while nondurables climbed 1.3%. Shipments of chemical products were relatively weak for the month—up 0.7%, after a 0.1% decline in June. New orders for manufactured goods rose 3.7%, with the durables component gaining 6%. Orders for capital goods advanced a rapid 5.4%, following a 6.3% gain in the previous month. Production in the manufacturing sector rose 0.6% in July, the same rate as in June.
