Shipments of durables dropped 0.5%, while nondurables declined 2%. Chemical sales were off 0.2% and inventories rose slightly. Inventories at the all-manufacturing level fell in January, the consequence of the large decline in petroleum stocks. Overall, there was little change in inventory/sales ratios for most manufacturing industries. New orders for manufactured products plunged 5.6% in January, with the durable goods component down almost 9%. Machinery orders fell 9%...
