The slowdown was the result of a sharp drop in earnings from overseas. Domestic profits gained a rapid 3.8% for the quarter, following a 1.8% rise in the previous three months. For the entire year, corporate operating earnings advanced 7.3%, the third consecutive year of increases. Profits of financial firms fell 4.9%, while nonfinancial companies registered a gain of 11%.
