The leading indicator for the chemical industry has risen for the sixth consecutive month. The index is now at its highest level since early 2008. Production of chemicals and allied products rose at a 7.6% annualized rate in the first quarter, compared with 0.7% in the fourth quarter of 2011 and 1.9% in the third quarter. The majority of the indicator’s components exhibited upward momentum. Stock prices rose for the third month in a row.
