The leading indicator for the chemical industry rose for the ninth consecutive month in April and was about 17% above the recent low of July 2010. Chemical production has also been on a sustained upward trend. Output gained 1.5% in March and rose at an annualized rate of 9.6% in the first quarter of 2011, following an advance of 2.7% in fourth quarter 2010.
