The leading indicator for the chemical industry dropped 0.8% in November, the first decline in four months. At the same time, industrial production in chemicals rose 0.3%, the reflection of previous gains in the indicator. Output in chemicals has advanced for five consecutive months and is now only 0.8% below year-ago levels. In contrast, production in the entire manufacturing sector remains 7.5% below last year’s results, with the output of durables down 11.7% and nondurables off 3.4%.
