The leading indicator for the chemical industry fell 0.8% in March, a less precipitous drop than the previous five months. Most components remained weak, but there was a jump in new construction. Production in the chemical process industries fell in February for the fourth consecutive month, with only the petroleum refining sector exhibiting signs of strength. Orders for manufactured products dropped 1.9% in February, with a 4.6% decline in new orders for durable goods. Manufacturing output fell 0.7%, and was 13.1% below the year-ago level.
