Gaining Strength

The leading indicator for the chemical industry rose 1.1% in April, the second consecutive monthly gain. Growth in the indicator began gathering momentum late last summer, and the index is now about 10% above the March 2009 low. Over the past year, industrial production in the chemical industry has advanced 6.9%, compared with a 5.1% gain in overall manufacturing output.
