The Leading Indicator for the chemical industry gained 1% in September, more than recouping the previous month’s decline, and industry stock prices rebounded. Chemical process industries output increased, despite an overall manufacturing production decline. Within the chemical process industries, output rose in building materials, paper, and nonferrous metals. There was a decline in petroleum refining output, but no change in rubber and plastics products output for the month.
