Rare Earths Industry Faces Tighter Regulation

The Chinese government has launched a campaign to tighten regulation of the country’s rare earths mining industry, in an effort to crack down on illegal mining that has resulted in overproduction and widespread environmental pollution. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT; Beijing) announced earlier this month that rare earth enterprises exceeding production quotas or employing environmentally damaging production methods could have their quotas and licenses cancelled.
