Fertilizer Firms’ Profits Soar on Higher Prices and Demand

Tight markets for agricultural crops pushed fertilizer sales volumes and prices higher in the first half, leading to record earnings for firms operating in mineral-rich sites in Canada. PotashCorp says its second-quarter net income soared 220%, to $905.1 million ($2.82/share), on “rising global fertilizer demand and the impact of significantly higher prices for potash, nitrogen, and phosphate products.” Mosaic reported net earnings of $862.5 million for its fiscal fourth quarter ended May 31, a more than four-fold increase over the same period last...
