EU Parliament Approves Phosphate Ban

European authorities have approved a restriction of the use of phosphates in consumer laundry and automatic dishwasher detergents by June 30, 2013, and January 1, 2017, respectively. High levels of phosphates in waterways can cause rapid algae growth, which threatens aquatic life. The EU requirements also limit the phosphorous content in consumer laundry detergents to 0.5 grams per “standard washing dose” in hard water and at 0.3 grams per dose in consumer automatic dishwasher detergents.
