Climate change: Europe sets ambitious 2030 targets, but concerns remain

The European Commission has proposed a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions for 2030 from 1990 levels and a target of 27% of renewable energy in the total energy mix. Both figures are binding EU-wide—but not at a national level. No new target has been set for energy efficiency. An International Renewable Agency analysis suggests that the level of renewable energy in the total energy mix could be doubled, to 30%, by 2030.
