Comments (1) for PPG Industries: Sharper focus on coatings core
1.
My step-father, Dr. E. C. Larsen, would be very happy to see the current state of the coating division. PPG brought him to the company in 1960 to head up their R&D labs, at a time when PPG only tended to promote from within. He quickly moved up the ladder to become senior VP of Coatings & Resins. When he took over, Coatings was the smallest and least profitable part of the company. By the time he retired in 1977, he had built the division to be the most profitable part of the company. He talked about how hard he worked to justify investments in that division, and that it was considered the 'red-headed stepchild' of the company. He was instrumental in building two of the current R&D labs, which helped move the quality of PPG coatings from average to superior. I think he would still be amazed to learn that Coatings was now 90% of sales.
