R&D emphases continue to shift toward foci on sustainability, renewables, and green chemistry. Companies are also spending more to improve their products, and the targets are on cost-cutting initiatives for both production and customer end-uses in this turbulent economic environment. DuPont took the top spot in the rankings of the biggest R&D spenders this year—edging out Mitsubishi Chemical, Dow Chemical, and BASF, who took the second, third, and fourth spots, respectively.
