EU set to okay DuPont biotech seed

The European Commission is set to approve cultivation of DuPont’s 1507, a genetically modified (GM) maize, after 28 EU member-state representatives were unable to reach a qualified majority to ban the seed by a court-mandated deadline. According to reports, 19 ministers voted on 11 February against approving the seed. Germany abstained from the vote, citing differing opinions within its own government. Under EU law, the outcome does not constitute a qualified majority. The commission is now required to approve the seed, although the timetable is unclear...
