EPA proposes lower renewable fuel standard mandate

EPA’s 2014 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) proposal lowers the amount of biofuels refiners are mandated to blend into fuels for the first time in the program’s history. The agency says increased biofuels production mixed with declined overall fuel consumption has saturated the nation’s fuel supply with ethanol. EPA’s proposal calls for 15.0–15.2 billion gallons of biofuels be blended into the US fuel supply, down from the 16.55 billion gallons mandated be used in 2013. “Nearly all gasoline sold in the US is now E10, which is fuel with up to 10%...
