Canada Withdraws from Kyoto Protocol

Canada’s environment minister Peter Kent says the country is withdrawing from the Kyoto Protocol, the world’s only legally binding instrument for curbing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Kent says Canada is invoking its legal right to withdraw. The move comes just one day after marathon United Nations talks concluded in Durban, South Africa to secure the ‘Durban Platform’ a legally binding program for GHG emissions from 2015 onward. “The Kyoto Protocol does not represent the path forward for Canada,” Kent says.
