Third-quarter results vary at specialty chemical firms

Specialty chemical makers posted mixed third-quarter results as some end markets proved resilient despite economic headwinds, while others faltered. Companies with significant exposure to the personal-care market, such as International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF; New York) and Ashland, reported solid sales figures. Electronic chemicals, meanwhile, dragged down Chemtura’s results, while Innospec and NewMarket saw sales decline in their fuel-additives businesses.
