Tata to close UK soda ash plant, expand sodium bicarbonate unit

Tata Chemicals Europe (Northwich, UK) plans to close the bigger of its two soda ash production facilities in the United Kingdom during the first half of 2014. The move will lead to 220 job cuts, 38% of the company’s UK workforce. Tata is the only producer of soda ash in the United Kingdom. Its plants are at Winnington and Lostock, near Northwich. They have combined capacity for 700,000 m.t./year of synthetic soda ash. The Winnington plant, which Tata is proposing to close, is designed to produce 470,000 m.t./year of soda ash.
