Price Hikes and Higher Volumes Boost Third-Quarter Sales

Europe-based companies continue to report higher sales for the third quarter of 2011, compared with the corresponding period of 2010, due to price hikes and higher volumes, particularly in the early part of the quarter. Earnings are more mixed, however, due to rising raw material costs. Total posted lower earnings for its chemicals business because “the environment deteriorated for petrochemicals due to softer demand” in Europe and North America.
