EFSA concludes aspartame is "safe at current levels of exposure"

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA; Parma, Italy) has completed its first full risk assessment of aspartame, used as a sweetener, and concluded that both aspartame and its breakdown products are "safe for human consumption at current levels of exposure," the authority says. The risk assessment included a rigorous review of all available scientific research on aspartame and its degradation products, including both animal and human studies, EFSA says.
