Blast at Shell plant injures workers, boosts styrene prices

A huge explosion and fire on 3 June at Shell Chemicals’ Moerdijk, Netherlands, complex injured two employees. The blast occurred at about 11:00 pm local time at a propylene oxide–styrene monomer (POSM) plant, MSPO-2, and was followed by a fire, Shell says. The injuries are not believed to be life threatening, Graham van’t Hoff, executive v.p. for Shell Chemicals, said in comments at the ACC annual meeting, held recently at Colorado Springs, CO.
