Third-quarter earnings decline in Europe on weak demand

Most of the leading Europe-based chemical companies reported lower earnings in the third quarter of 2012 compared with the same period of last year, although sales generally held up. Weaker profits reflect tough economic conditions, particularly in the eurozone. These lower profits have reduced demand there, as well as a slowdown in other parts of the world. Industrial gases companies Linde and Air Liquide reported relatively robust performances, due partly to growth in emerging markets.
