Japanese firms report improved earnings

Most of the leading Japanese chemical companies swung to profit or achieved higher earnings for the fiscal first half, ended 30 September. The depreciation of the Japanese currency, a gradual recovery in the Japanese economy including a rise in consumer spending, and an improvement in exports, played a significant role in the stronger earnings figures. Only Ube Industries reported lower earnings for the period.
