Chemical Week Magazine :: Basic Chemicals & Plastics U.S. Chlor-alkali Rates Rise...10:48 AM MDT | July 8, 2011 U.S. chlor-alkali operating rates in May rose one percentage point from April levels, to 90%, according to the Chlorine Institute (Arlington, VA). Total chlorine production increased about 6.9% in May sequentially. May chlorine gas production was higher by about 49,090 tons, to 1.02 million tons, up 5.1% from April. Liquid chlorine production rose by 70,209 tons, to 874,056 tons, or 8.7% more than the year-ago period. Year-on-year total chlorine production for May rose 13.7% from May 2010, to 1.9 million tons.
