Turnarounds Boost North American Ethylene Prices

The North American petrochemical plant turnaround season is beginning, and U.S. ethane prices have fallen 7% since the start of the year, to about 68 cts/gal, due partly to reduced operating rates at ethylene units. Several major petchem producers—including ExxonMobil Chemical, LyondellBasell, and Shell Chemical—are taking down large steam crackers for maintenance this month, resulting in lower demand for ethane and lower production volumes of ethylene.
