North American polyethylene (PE) contracts for January rolled over from December, according to a recent report from IHS Chemical. However, producers have announced a 4-cts/lb increase for February that looks likely to succeed given the supply/demand situation. Producer PE inventories declined by almost 80 million lbs in December 2013 amid robust sales. “While January statistics are not yet available, we believe January sales volumes were strong as resin processors rebuilt inventories in advance of a possible February price increase,” says the report.
